The second edition of the MEGAFONE ACTIVISM AWARD will take place in April 2023 and is an initiative of a coalition of organizations that includes Pimp My Carroça, Instituto Socioambiental (ISA), WWF, Greenpeace Brasil, Engajamundo, Hivos and Vozes Pela Ação Climática Justiça (VAC).
One of the biggest challenges we have in 2023 and in the coming years in Brazil is to fight the deterioration of environmental policies, the high rates of deforestation and fires, among other climate impacts. The same happens with social issues. With the weakening of these policies, which is at its peak, we understand that it is very important to strengthen the organized civil society and activism presents itself as one of the most important tools we have to stop setbacks and guarantee rights.

The Megafone Awards intend to contribute to increasing the visibility of activist actions, fostering the practice of activism as a catalyst for social transformation and the emergence of new agents in activism, especially young people and women, in the debate and action to combat the climate crisis and related causes. The award legitimizes activism in the current political context, both in urban centers and in the digital space, with a main focus on socio-environmental activism, but not restricted to it.

There will be 70 nominees and 14 awardees, in 14 categories.
DIRECT ACTION
Activist action in person and directly (taking up space to make a complaint or intervening to prevent an injustice from happening are common examples, but there are many others possible). Any direct action that took place in 2024, in Brazil, and that can be shown in some way (video, photo, news, etc.) can be registered.
STREET ART
Activist street art can be graffiti, posters, interventions, performances, video projections or any other artistic language that took place on the streets in 2024 in Brazil and that can be shown in some way (video, photo, news, etc.).

OUTRAGED CITIZEN
Outraged outburst, in person or on social media, in video, audio or other format, that deals with some Brazilian social or socio-environmental reality and that has been published and shared on social media in 2024.

Activist audiovisual documentary in short or medium-length, which portrays some Brazilian social or environmental reality and was released in 2024 .
Photography

YOUNG ACTIVIST
Activist aged 18 to 24 who fights for a Brazilian social or socio-environmental cause and who stood out in 2024.

SOCIAL MEDIA PROFILE

Meme or activist humor content, can be a video, photo, cartoon, image, gif, audio or any possible format, which was published in 2024 and shared on social media in Brazil.

Activist music (with or without music video), of any musical genre, that portrays some Brazilian social or socio-environmental reality and was released in 2024.
INDEPENDENT MEDIA REPORTING

ENTRIES

The ENTRIES can only be made through the official MEGAFONE ACTIVISM AWARD form, which can be accessed right here on the site, by clicking on SUBMIT at the end of this page, after having read and agreed with all the regulations.
The DEADLINE for applications is February 17, 2023. The same person is allowed to register more than one action, as long as they are different actions.

Besides entering the award, it is also allowed to enter activism actions done by other people (THIRD PARTIES), and if these actions are selected, the organization will contact the third parties to validate if they accept to participate.
Personal entries or entries from third parties compete EQUALLY, under the same rules and criteria.
​
It is necessary to send the material requested via LINK, according to the accepted formats in each category (video, audio, etc.), as stated on the form. It is also necessary that the link sent is FREELY ACCESSIBLE and remains open, otherwise the entry will not be evaluated by the jury.

JURY AND EVALUATION CRITERIA
All the award categories will be evaluated by a specialized JURY, composed of activists nominated by the organizations that promote the award (see organizations above - WHO WE ARE). The categories MEGAFONE OF THE YEAR and JURY AWARD will not be open to submissions, as in these categories nominees will be selected directly by the jury.
The names that make up the jury will not be made public.

Entries will be evaluated by the following CRITERIA:

Impact on the cause to which the activism is directed and on the public debate about the issue

Ability to transmit the message in a creative and coherent way to the theme addressed
-
Ability to inform, mobilize and inspire others through activism
The 5 most voted by the jury in each category will be announced as NOMINEES on the Megafone Awards website and social media (and may also appear on the websites and social media of the organizations promoting the Awards).

NOMINEES AND AWARDEES
​
After the announcement of the nominees, the jury enters the second stage of voting, where each juror may vote for only one nominee per category and the most voted will be declared the WINNER OF THE MEGAFONE AWARD 2023 in their category.
THE SELECTED AWARDEES WILL BE REVEALED IN APRIL, through an online awards ceremony. The results will also be announced on the websites and social media of the Megafone Award and of the organizations presenting the Award.
